Cooking with Kids: Chips & Salsa

chips-salsa-blog

We used this recipe when we read “Dragons Love Tacos” with our littles. The book talks a lot about how much Dragons LOOOVE tacos, but they don’t do so well with spicy salsa. This is a fun and easy recipe that allows lots of participation from the kids so we thought it would be perfect for this book.

img_2748Here’s the Recipe:

2 14.5 oz cans of diced tomatoes
1 can El Pato Sauce (yellow can)
1 can diced green chiles
1 bunch green onions- cut fine
1/2 bunch Cilantro (leaves only)
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp cumin
1/8 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp garlic powder

  1. Blend together tomatoes, El Pato, Spices, and Cilantro (let the kids pull off the leaves)
  2. Stir in green chiles and green onions

We love getting kids involved in making this recipe by having each child dump an ingredient into the blender. Depending on their find motor skills, they can even measure it out! We find that it tastes that much better to them, knowing they did some of the work.  Not to mention, doing grown-up tasks independently helps grow their confidence!

Enjoy!
